The LDT designation would normally indicate that the unit was raised under Confederate government, not state, authority, among men who had been exempted from the draft and from normal Confederate army service. Presumably this battalion would be composed of the men detailed to work making naval engines, etc., at the Columbus naval works, with perhaps a sprinkling of some actual CSN personnel who were serving there.
