Thanks for this additional data. I also have some of the enlisted men's pension papers, and a J.H. Warren is noted as being commander of the battalion, probably after Whiteside. Captain George J. Golden is noted as being in command of company B of the battalion. None of these officers were in Confederate States Naval service, which further supports my assumption that it was not a Naval unit,in that sense of the word.
