Re: 3rd GA Batt. Sharpshooters
In Response To: 3rd GA Batt. Sharpshooters ()

See: Supplement to the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies, part II, vol. 6, pp. 158-163. Also: Georgia Sharpshooter, about William R. Montgomery.

The following letter on the formation of the Battalion was written by Dan M. Byrd Jr. on 16 August 1960 to Mr. Pfanz: By April 1863 BGEN Woffard had selected six companies of 50 men, one from each of his five regiments and legions, and a sixth from the 16th, 18th, 24th regiments, and Phillips' Legion. For the Captains, he selected one Lieutenant from each regiment and legion, except the 16th, from which he selected two. The three Lieutenants in each new company were selected from among those most distinguished in battle. By April 25 the selection process was complete. MGEN McLaws and LGEN Longstreet approved. General Lee approved the formation on May 25, 1863. By June 3 the 3rd Georgia Battalion was formed and drilled in a separate camp.

I have learned that Company D, 3rd Batt. was taken from Cobb's Legion; Company A formed from the 18th GA; Company B formed from the 24th GA; Company C was of the 16th GA; Company F was from Phillips' Legion; and Company E appears to have come from the four units mentioned above.
