I have his service record and the only things dated near this time is one record where he drew pay on June 10 1864 and then then the card that says "Roll of Prisoners of War" roll not dated but captured on June 15, 1864 at Big Shanty, GA and Forwarded on June 17, 1864 also "captured by the 15th Army Corp and forwarded to the Provost Marshal General Department of the Cumberland from May 9 to Sept 8, 1864 at the bottom is says number of roll: 1; sheet 21 Army Corps. Where can this be found? I wonder if his being listed as "private" was just an error of the card transcriptionist. Someone else has a copy of the list of prisoners at the other end (where they were forwarded to) and RTM Simmons isn't there so one figures he must have escaped but then to have a letter from the hospital on June 18 seems to make things a little stranger- one problem is that this isn't a complete letter. Someone in 1908 transcribed RTM's letters but also only took excerpts from the originals. Originals would be nice but it does help fill in some gaps. I'll try to see if I can track down a copy of that book you mention. I'll also check with Kennesaw Mtn. park like you said. Thanks!!!!
