Re: 4th Georgia Infantry

I'm not too sure. The informaion I have from my family's history shows my GGG Grandfather as being in the "4th GA Inf" as a Surgeon. During the Civil War, my GGG Grandfather was a Blacksmith/Gunsmith, by trade. He made a rifle named the "Nelson Rifle" which was used extesively by the Confederate Army. So I'm not too sure where the "Surgeon" part came into play. My Grandafther (who is still living)remembers his Grandfather (who was the son on John Daniel Nelson, of the 4t GA Inf) talking about J D Nelson being a Captain in the Confederate Army. Now you can probably see where the confusion starts. I have been banging my head trying to figure this out. Every search I have done shows my GGG Grandfather as being a "Surgeon in the 4th GA Inf". I also know, that during the War, Confederate Surgeons were made out of just about anyone that could perform basic medical services. I have ordered a copy of his Confederate Military Service Record. So hopefully, there will be more information on his service record that my family didn't have. I have a partial copy of his Pension Record and it states that he was at home 'sick' and not far from his unit, when his Regiment surrendered in May of 1865. His home was in Georgia. If this is true, then he did not serve in the 4th GA, as the 4th was part of the Army of Northern Virginia and surrendered at Appomattox in May of 1865. But I'm not giving up. Thanks for responding.
