This is from Doles-Cook Brigade Book:

"Dr. Thomas M. Nelson was the first surgeon of the Fourth Georgia Regiment. He enlisted as a private in the Albany Guards. Soon after his promotion he resinged and raised a company of cavalry called the "Nelson Rangers," joined a Mississippi regiment and was promoted colonel. He was killed in battle in 1865. He was a brave and competent officer, and an intelligent and refined gentleman."
