It doesn't hurt to ask! Some militiamen came into town to be paroled when Federal troops set a military post. All such "prisoner-of-war" records were included when the consolidated service files were created. It may appear that all of these are Confederate records, but the index does -- especially for Georgia and Virginia -- include a fair number who were in state service only.
