Re: chaplains
In Response To: chaplains ()

I am sure there are several books on this subject, but I just read "Soldier of God, A Confederate Chaplain's Odyssey" by James Burnham (AuthorHouse, Bloomington, Ind., 3/16/2006).James Burnham is the GGGrandson of Sgt. Joel Burnham, D Company of the 9th Georgia Infantry. The book relates his actions as a Chaplain/Soldier just before, during, and after the war. James Burnham, the author, was a Chaplain during the Vietnam War, and researched his GGGrandfather out of couriosity as to how a Confederate Chaplain may have reconciled the act of killing the enemy with his devout (Baptist) beliefs. On many occasions back then, the only difference between a soldier and a Chaplain could be the black frock sometimes (and sometimes not) worn by the soldier. As you are probably aware, there were very few (if any) "Official" Chaplains in the Confederate Army, so many devout men acted as preachers, parsons, etc., when not engaged in battle.
