Re: chaplains
In Response To: Re: chaplains ()

Hello John,
I was trying to make a point (very poorly, I'm afraid), that many men regarded as Chaplains by the Confederacy were not seperated by (an Official rank), and were usually (but not always), soldiers that fought in combat and preached when not in combat. Hard to compare these men to today, where a Chaplain has an Officer's Rank and does not bear arms against an enemy. Many dedicated preachers/pastors would make long trips to provide religious services for the men, but again, these were not official Chaplains, but were providing the services of providing Spiritual guidance and preaching, reading, etc. to the men. I have never seen an Official Confederate (Army) rank as Chaplain, although in many cases these men were designated as Chaplains by orders, and/or given the title by a military organization (Corps, Division, Regiment, etc.). In this sense, the Confederacy had many Chaplains.......
