Neal, I disagree with your last statement that "there were very few (if any) "Official" chaplains in the Confederate Army." If you search muster rolls and compiled service records for many regiments you will see that there were men whose sole job was to be a chaplain. Many of these men were preachers back home and joined the army to serve the men's spiritual needs. Unfortunately, many of the early chaplains 1861-1862 had a tendency to bring too many of their own vices with them and they were relieved or resigned. A regimental chaplain served on the regimental staff and I believe entered the service as a major.
