Barney, I would be interested if you knew the date of death and burial spot for John W. Smith. Also, are you sure your gg grandfather was in Company E as there was also a Corporal John W. Smith who was in Company C. Both Company E & C came from Campbell County? The only info on the Smith in Company E is what Jim Martin gave you in his previous post. The Company E Corporal Smith was listed as AWOL at end of February 1865. However, this may not have been a dishonorable act as many Georgia soldiers were listed as AWOL because if they had gone on a leave back to Georgia at the beginning of 1865 they would have had trouble returning to their units in Virginia because of the large number of Federal troops creating mayhem and destruction throughout Georgia and South Carolina. I have a humorous incident in my book "Red Clay to Richmond" that involves the Corporal Smith from Company C plus more info on him. The Co. C Smith was born in Madison County, GA on March 10, 1840 and he died in Atlanta on July 15, 1902 and is buried in Atlanta's Westview Cemetery. Since you mentioned that your gggrandfather was not buried in Atlanta then the Company C Smith is probably not him.
