Bill:
If you will notice that many of the dates on the roster (attached link) are after May 2, 1862 when several sources I've seen say it ceased to exist. Alan Pitts informed me that that was the date of reorganization, when soldiers were required to enlist for 3 years or the war. If they reupped they were allowed to transfer to any regiment they chose. It appears that my guncle and yours joined this unit and stayed with it. It went through many unit consolidations with other units after the Atlanta campaign.
The unit was 3rd E of 25th GA until it was consolidated with 1st GA Inf Btn in 11/63 and with 1st GA Sharpshooter Btn in 3/65 and with 29th,30th and 66th GA infantry regiments in April 65. I have been unable to tell how they were designated after these consolidations. As long as they were being consolidated with battalions they probably kept the same regiment designation.
They were surrendered at Bennett's House, Durham Station, North Carolina on April 26th 1865.
I have a list of higher command assignments of the regiment if you are interested.
And yes there were many Henry County men who joined this unit throughout the war. They must have had a good recruiter.
