For Jim Crocker:

I would be interested in getting the names and companies of the men of the 7th S.C. Cavalry who were paroled at Augusta. Given the fact that few of the men of that regiment were originally from districts near Augusta, it might lend support to the fact that they were with the Nicholson-led contingent which cut its way out to the west on the evening of April 8.

Another possibility is that they were responding to orders to rendezvous at Augusta. When Martin Gary arrived at Greensboro, N.C., after getting out just before the surrender at Appomattox, he met approximately 200 men of his brigade who were returning to Virginia after having obtained horses. Presumably all but a handful of these men would have been either in the Hampton Legion or in the 7 S.C. Cavalry. A few may have been in the 24 Virginia Cavalry or in the small contingent of the 7 Georgia Cavalry. With these men, Gary accompanied Jefferson Davis' party from Greensboro to Charlotte.

I have seen several orders (or references to orders) signed by Gary while at Charlotte, furloughing men of his brigade to S.C. (to obtain remounts), with directions to rendezvous at Augusta.
