38th Georgia Infantry

I'm reading Stephen Sears book, "To the Gates of Richmond". In the orders of battle in the appendix he lists the 38th GA in Toombs Brigade, D. R. Jones' Division at Seven Pines. Then he places the 38th in Lawton's Brigade, Winder's Division for the Seven Days campaign. For the battles at Yorktown and Williamsburg, the 38th is not listed. Is Sears correct in his placement of the 38th? I had previously thought the 38th traveled to Virginia from Georgia with Lawton's Brigade, thence to Jackson in the Valley. My GGG-grandfather, William Wilson Kirkland enlisted with the 38th on May 1, 1862; would he likely have traveled north with the 38th or gone on later? How long did an enlistee stay in the camps of instruction?

Thanks,
Eddie
