Thanks, George. The report from a friend of his death simply says one of the battles in the Valley in Virginia so I see that is correct, just the 1864 campaign. The reason I thought it was the earlier campaign is that his personal bible is taken off of a dead Confederate on April, 1864 in Louisiana. Now I am back to square one as to how it got there. My only guess is that he left it on the field to be taken when he was captured at Front Royal since a fellow Confederate ended up with it. It seems dropping knapsacks before a battle can cause you to lose items to either side. I don't think that he would have given the bible to another Southerner while in prison as it's directions were to return it to his family.
