"During the Battle of Sharpsburg MD, some Confederate regiments did not muster fifty officers and men on the field. Twenty-one enlisted men would be a respectable number for a company."

Example: The 18th Ga. at Antietam: Statistics for Maryland Campaign

Initial Strength: 177

Killed in Action (KIA): 27

Wounded (WIA): 64

Losses, % of Initial Strength: 51.4% http://aotw.org/officers.php?unit_id=580
At this time, the 18th was part of the Texas Brigade, Commanded by Col. W.T. Wofford of the 18th during the battle, Hood having been promoted. Only the 1st Texas had greater losses. My two great uncles were in Co. A of the 18th. The regiment fought in the Cornfield. Stan
