I restrict myself in this discussion to that of the 3rd Lieutenant, Confederate Army. I note that in Hardee's Manual that a 3rd Lieutenant took his place in the first platoon along with the 1st Lieutenant.
On a different note, we had up through about 1950, the unofficial title of Tombstone Admiral. These were officers of the rank of Captain who were accorded the rank of Rear Admiral on the retired list, based on some meritorious award. However, they did not receive pay at that of an O-7.
And there was my father, a Mustang LCDR. who in Tokyo, ca 1955, on the staff of the U. S. Army Commanding General, was tagged with the title of Navy Major.
