I don't have the original article but copied portions of it, with brackets added for brevity and comments. Here it is: Confederate Veteran, vol. 26, no. 4, Apr 1918, pp. 161-162, "With the 38th Georgia Regiment," by F. L. Hudgins, Chamblee, Georgia. "On June 30, companies A and K of the 38th Georgia, commanded by Captains Miller and Stubbs, were placed on the picket line. On July 1, Gordon marched the brigade away [leaving the two companies behind without orders]. The companies eventually abandoned the position and hurried after the brigade. Bill Jenkins, kettle drummer of Company A, beat the long roll and the two companies marched quick step to overtake the brigade [no explanation was given for leaving them behind] ... [at the battlefield] General Gordon gave the order, 'forward at right shoulder, shift arms!' Federal infantry at the stream [Rock Creek] lay motionless awaiting our approach. When we reached the creek, Captain W. L. McLeod, commanding the 38th Georgia, was killed, and Lieutenants Oglesby and Matthews were severely wounded. Sergeant Major Phil Alexander ordered a federal soldier to throw down his arms. He started to do so, and Alexander ordered another to do the same thing. Glancing at the first man, who was raising his gun to fire, Alexander turned on his right heel and struck him with a heavy sword, splitting his head open. The gun went off, striking Alexander in the right hip. ... A minie ball entered my left breast, going down and out under the fifth rib [spitting blood], Lieutenant Baxter [did not think I would live long]. Dr. Taylor, assistant surgeion [thought I would get well - I accepted his advice]. I walked out to the field hospital and watched the progress of the battle. On the Fourth, Tom Raines of the 13th Georgia, I. N. Nash of the 38th Georgia, and myself, all badly wounded, were placed in an ambulance, and commenced the retreat. At Winchester, Nash's hand was amputated."
