Alan, thanks for the additional information. I am starting to get a better picture of Capt. Boykin and his home. I am starting to think that the men that captured Lott Carley may have known Capt. Boykin and since his home was on the way to the train depot, they stopped by there and had lunch. (making this part of the local legend about a camp there, not true)Also a good friend of mine lived in the Old Boykin House when he was a teenager. When they bought the house it was told to them that at one time it was used as a hospital during the war. But the distance of Liberty Hill from LaGrange was so far that is not probable. I am just trying to sort out some old tales and make the most sense from this diary as I can from what we know about the area.
Since Lt. Carley was captured 4 miles north of Rock Mills, Alabama, I guess we can assume that they were Alabama State Guard or Militia. If that were the case would they have handed him off to Georgia Guard for the trip to West Point??
