Thomas Jefferson Cash

I am looking for information to clarify the Confederate service record of Thomas Jefferson Cash. He is described in the records as Thomas J. Cash, Thomas Cash, and T.J. Cash. Also, he served in two and possibly three different Georgia Infantry units: Cobbs's Legion, 19th Georgia Infantry, and the 56th Georgia Infantry.

Thomas J. Cash first enlisted in Cobb's Legion, Company B on July 30, 1861, but received a disability discharge (cause unknown) on January 26, 1862. His further service in 1862 gets cloudy, though, but there is some evidence that he served in the 19th Georgia Infantry. He is listed on a roll of paroled prisoners in the 19th Georgia Infantry that were captured at Sharpsburg on September 28, 1862 and sent to Fortress Monroe, Virginia on December 8, 1862. His name on this list is recorded as Thomas J. Cash. Family hisory also says that he served in Virginia at Yorktown and was later captured in a battle in Virginia. The confusion comes in as there is a Tineas J. Cash (frequently recorded at T.J. Cash) in the 19th Georgia Infantry, Company D. Both men are frequently recorded as T.J. Cash. Finally, another record indiactes that Thomas J. Cash (recorded as T.J. Cash this time) joined the 56th Georgia Infantry on May 5, 1862. Thomas Cash's records are more complete for his service in the 56th Georgia and they indicate that he served until July 1864 when he was captured near Marietta, Georgia (family history), or possibly deserted (U.S. Army records). I would appreciate any information anyone has on Thomas J. Cash, particularly his Confederate service in 1862.

Thanks,

George McCluskey
