George,

If Thomas Jefferson Cash was in Cobb’s Legion from 7/30/61 to 1/26/62 and he was in the 56th Georgia from 5/5/62 to the summer of 1864, then there is only a three month window for him to have been in the 19th Georgia. Interestingly, during that period the 19th Georgia was at Yorktown from the middle of April until the Confederates pulled out on 5/3/62. The problem would be that the records for Thomas J. Cash of Co. D, 19th Georgia show he enlisted 6/11/61, was captured and exchanged as you noted in 1862, and had several receipts for pay and clothing throughout 1863 and 1864. That makes it seem like a second man. Also, there was a Thomas Cash, age 29, in the 1860 census of Coweta County, which is where Co. D of the 19th Georgia was raised. In the Fulton County census for 1860 there is Thomas Cash, 16 son of Willis Cash, 47, wheelwright.

This may be the clincher. Roster of the Courts-Martial in the Confederate States Armies by Jack A. Bunch shows that Private T. J. Cash, Co. D, 19th Ga., was found guilty of mutiny and sentenced to death by a court martial on 2/28/1865. There is an annotation that evidence of the sentence having been carried out is inconclusive.
