His file contains his handwritten furlough request below:

Camp Lee, near Richmond Va, Gen'l Hood, Sir

I have the honor of making an application through you for a Furlough of (2) days to visit my home in Georgia. I enlisted in the army of Virginia on the 15th of August 1861, when I was but 15 years old, and since that time have never been absent from my Regiment more than 14 hours at a time, either with or without leave, until I was taken prisoner at Gettysburg. This is the first time that I have every made an application for a leave of absence. I have the honor to be, yours very Respectfully D. C. Bacon Private, Company B 8th Ga Regt.
