Many thanks, George. As usual, you've "gone the extra mile."

1. The officer, Edwin H. Bacon, Jr., was DeWitt Clinton Bacon's elder brother. I have no notes on an Emanuel Bacon as a family member -- perhaps a cousin or "cousin."

2. You have "my man," and the forms of his name, DeWitt Clinton Bacon (D C, D W C, D Clinton) illustrate the problems and pitfalls of the NARA-based CSR entries transcribed in the NPS Soldiers and Sailors listings, the confusing (to many of us) Georgia units (which 1st Ga, which Co. H, which 8th Ga), and some of the other snags and snarls that make your service so valuable. Given the info, I re-checked NPS-SS under 8th Ga Inf and found "Clint" Bacon -- not once, but twice (I think) -- once as Bacon (#75 on regimental listing), once as Beacon (#118)!

3. It seems clear that he was under age when enlisted (at 15), that he was at Gettysburg, captured, imprisoned briefly, and exchanged. The (Aug 63)furlough request in his CSR is informative, for it comes from Camp Lee [the old fairgrounds of Richmond, Va], a groupment location for exchanged or paroled POWs. It suggests that he took advantage of the trip home around the end of Aug 63 to set up enlistment in a local, Savannah unit (Co. H, 1st Ga) on 15 Nov rather than return to his old outfit (if it still existed as such). It was evidently from the "new" unit that he was detailed on the same date to the local Signal Corps in Dec 64 - Oct 64 (at least, and probably later) as a telegraph op also instructed in visual signaling. All of the scraps of info help to flesh out a name and a service record, as you well know. It also sheds light on my own research and expands my knowledge base. Finding and seeing the face of the young man elsewhere on the 'Net was the perfect touch. Thanks again!
