46th Regigment Ga. Infantry

I have a Benjamin Franklin Hendricks born 1831 who according to Ancestry.com served in Co. H of the 46th Regiment Ga. Infantry. According to my data from a family tree, he was killed in the Civil War on 15 Dec. 1863. I find no record of him in the Soldiers/Sailors Civil War site nor on another paid site to which I subscribe. In fact there is no record of the 46th Ga Infantry Regiment. I searched Google for Civil War Battles that occurred around December 15, 1863 without success. Is it likely that this might have been a Georgia State Infantry Unit?

Any assistance would be helpful. I despise the family histories which state "He was a civil War Soldier" or "he died in the Civil War" without any supporting information. Several times I have found that the information is completely in error and in fact the man was never in the military. Unless I can support their service, I do not even use the Civil War Service data.

Thanks very much.
