Re: 46th Regiment Ga. Infantry
In Response To: 46th Regigment Ga. Infantry ()

Mr. Holman,

There was a 46th Georgia Infantry Regiment. It was formed at Camp Stephens, Griffin, Georgia in March 16, 1862 and served in the Western Theater. In December 1863 the regiment would have been in Dalton. If the person in question died on December 15, 1863, it would have been likely from wounds received at Missionary Ridge, Tennessee.

There is no Compiled Service Record (CSR) for this person, however, there is one for a John B. Hendricks, Company H. A Benjamin F. Hendricks did not file for a Georgia Indigent Confederate Veteran Pension.

Keep in mind that the CSR's are incomplete. There are still significant gaps in many of them and I am not familiar enough with the CSR's for the 46th Georgia to tell you what survived and the historical gaps that exist. A person could have enlisted/conscripted and been injured, died of disease or wounds and been out of the service in between surviving records. I can tell you right now that much of the information in the Samuel Stout papers (Confederate Medical Director of Hospitals, Army of Tennessee) did not make it into the CSR's.

I totally agree about people placing incorrect, erronious, false, or misleading information on the various genealogical websites. People need to use some academic vigor and footnote their source but they're also probably the ones who claim they have Cherokee heritage and their grandmother was an Indian princess too.

I hope this helps.

Respectfully,
