Re: Some surgeons of Semmes Brigade

Tom,
Just a further note on Dr. Henry J. Parramore. He returned to Madison, Fl after the war and resumed his medical practice. His old homeplace is still standing, although it was moved several years ago a few miles west of town. Also, there was a Dr. Davis (or David), who Sgt. Willilam Moore Jones referenced in his diary as the 50th GA Regimental Surgeon. Jones did not want Dr. Davis to amputate his foot and asked Dr. Todd, assisted by Dr. Parramore, to perform the operation. I found a reference to a Dr. William J. David, Surgeon, in the 50th Ga Compiled Service Records, but unfortunately could find no further information.

Apparently, Dr. Todd's surgical skills worked. Sgt. Jones survived Point Lookout, Md. prison, returned to Georgia and lived to the ripe old age of 95. I believe he was the last surviving member of the 50th Georgia Infantry Regiment. I talked with one of Moore's descendants a couple of years ago and he mentioned that he was related to both Sgt. Jones and Dr. Parramore. I haven't researched it, but maybe there was some friendship or family connection between Jones and Dr. Parramore and that is why Parramore assisted Dr. Todd in amputating Jones' foot at Gettysburg.
Always intersting to find these little tidbits.
