His records show that he was present and paid following the battle of the Wilderness.

The fact that there was correspondence with the Georgia Board of Pension Commissioners in 1915 questioning his death during the war is a mystery.

As far as I know, only veterans or their widows were eligible for Confederate pensions.

This being said, I would assume it would have been his widow filing for the pension. This would also seem to me that she believed that he died in the war, having never returned home.

Why she waited til 1915 to file is strange. Pensions were first authorized ca 1895. Perhaps she had remarried and later widowed.

The pension application papers in his name should help clear up this mystery. These may be procured through the service noted in the Red enclosed box above.

Although his name appears on a roll of those who surrendered at war's end. there is no assurance he was actually there. His mustering officer, Orderly Sergeant, may have failed to remove his name from the rolls previously. The last company muster roll in the records is that dated Aug. 31, 1864.

He was listed as:

Jesse M. Lord, Private, Company C, 4th Georgia Infantry, enlisted October 9, 1863 at Macon, Georgia by Col. Norris for the duration of the war, recorded present on the August 31, 1864 muster roll, last paid June 30, 1864, his name appears on a list of those who surrendered and were paroled at Augusta, Georgia May 25, 1865 in accordance with the military convention of April 26, 1865

His file contains correspondence between the Georgia Commissioner of Pensions and the Adjutant General, War Department, dated December 15, 1915 which contains the notation: "No record of death found."
