Thanks for the info. abt confederate service vs. home guards. I just wanted to add to this, as H. Adkisson is my ancestor. He had sons serving in AL Confederate units, one of whom lost his life. H. ADKISSON was well into his 50's when he enlisted. It was always my thought that he wanted to do his part, and indeed, had sons who were, but her was needed at home to provide for his wife and the female children he had at home, as well as younger sons who could not serve. To suggest he was sleeping comfortable in his bed while others serve does not portray him entirely. His family lost a son, has a son in law shot twice (Separate incidences), which left him disabled. They were contributors to the way and had consequences.
