Thank you very much, Alan for that information.

The trooper in question is my GGG Grandfather, Thomas P. Youngblood. He and his younger brother, Peter H. Youngblood both served with the 56th Alabama - and both in Company F.

Dates of service for Thomas (within existing records) range from enlistment on 1 January 1864 in Elyton, Alabama by Captain Rice, to the date he departed the regiment (under a surgeon's certificate) on 26 November 1864.

We've found two records for Peter, the first being his service with the 13th Alabama Cavalry, beginning on 6 September 1862. He was enlisted by Maj. Hewlett in Jackson, Alabama with an "additional duty as a waggoneer." He's shown on a muster roll for B Company, 13th Alabama Cav. for March-April 1863.

Next, Peter shows up in Company F, 56th Alabama Cav on a muster roll for May-June of 1863. (I've assumed this is the result of the formation of the 56th, from members of the 13th.) Again, he's found on a muster roll dated July-Aug 1863 apparently on "fatigue duty at camp." Rest and relaxation, I'm assuming. Again, he's shown on a muster roll for the 56th from September-October 1863. Then, the last record for Peter is the on the report of men absent "with leave" and sick from Ferguson's Brigade dated 30 March 1864. The location of the report is "near Calhoun Station." It states he departed on 18 November 1863, upon orders from the surgeon.

I'm very curious about the similarities in records for Thomas and Peter. They were both reported as absent "with leave" and sick on the same report for Ferguson's Brigade, dated 30 March 1864, (near Calhoun Station.) Peter "departed" on the 18th of Nov. 1863, Thomas then departed on the 26th of Nov. 1864 - almost exactly a year later.

Was Ferguson's Brigage HQ set up "near Calhoun, Georgia? Might this explain the reason for the report being made there?

I'm also somewhat unclear on what "date departed" refers to. I'm assuming it is the date they left the unit (F Company, 56th Cav) due to wounds received?

I'm also unsure of the significance of both men being on the same report, from the same location, made on the same date - yet "departing" almost a year apart. It almost reads like this report was done long after certain events occurred.

I can use all the help I can get in deciphering these records.
