Re: Caleb Jackson Ballew, Civilian

Regarding my ancestor who served in Co. G, 3rd Cav., CSA. He was James Clouse and lived and is buried in what once was the town of Shellmound, Tn. I always assumed it was the 3rd Cav out of Tennessee but I could be wrong. Shellmound is very close to the point where Tenn., Ala., and Georgia meet which is why his younger brother William Clouse ended up with Gordon in the 6th Alabama. James has a confederate gravestone that has been there a long time and appears to be the only one he ever had. His brother William had a tradition stone that is still standing since 1908. My son recently had a Confederate Companion Stone put on his grave that list his unit. They are both in a long forgotten cemetery that my son and I are trying to reclaim from time and nature. The father of these two men was George Clouse who ran the Nick-a-Jack Salt Peter Mine that dates back at least aother century. The Nick-a-Jack Cave which is the mine is still there but about 90% under wate due to TVA and Nick-a-Jack Lake. Shirley
