I don't know why a Henry County resident would need to cross the wide Chattanoochee to enlist. Quite a number of Bowens -- possibly his kin -- served in Henry County companies. Based on Bowen's age (45 in 1864), I'd expect to find him in a senior reserve unit. In fact A. J. Bowen appears on the roll of Capt. Appling's Company from Henry County. This company organized at Abbeville, Ala., Aug. 6, 1864, and was assigned to the 3rd Alabama Reserve Battalion.
