The fight at Champion Hill with Cumming's Brigade is confusing at best. The problem we have is the less than thorough or absent reporting. I honestly do not believe that they knew what happened sometimes. I have had to literally lay out a map with pushpins and walk through step by step each of the actions as described by various O.R. reports and other documents. Don't forget to read the Federal reports of Lindsey's and Garrard's Brigades. I believe LTC Jackson's force reunited with the main body of the brigade once the brigade collapsed and moved through the crossroads area. I reviewed Mr. Ed Bearass's "The Vicksburg Campaign, Volume II, pages 593-601, and 614-616 and did not find anything more specific on LTC Jackson's force.
