In Response To: 2d Georgia Cavalry ()

Mr. Daum,

The 2nd Georgia Cavalry was part of the cavalry contingent assigned to Longstreet for his Knoxville Campaign. This cavalry component, Martin's Division, campaigned in East Tennessee in the brutal winter of 1863/1864. One of the worst winters in American History. These cavalry regiments suffered grievously from privation and exposure. If your ancestor went AWOL during this winter, he was not a, 'Lone Ranger.' Many men left the ranks, without winter clothing and extra blankets, they were abused by the horrific weather. General Martian reported that many of his cavalrymen were without shoes.

Prior to Jan. 3, 1864 the closest date I can find for combat for the 2nd Georgia is Dec. 29, 1863 at Mossy Creek, Tennessee.

I recommend, "Cracker Caveliers," by John Randolph Poole. This book is a history of the 2nd Georgia Cavalry.

Regards, Richard Cofer
