Re: Medical Officers GA brigade of ANV

George,

Thank you for your looking up the information on the Drs. Amiss. I found an articial from the Confederate Military History that indicates that Dr. Thomas B. Amiss (Univ. of Penn, 1861) was a pvt. in Co. B. 6th VA Cavalry until after 1st Manassas and in Sept. 1861 was commissioned Assistant Surgeon and assigned to duty at Bailey's Factory hospital in Richmond. Later being transferred to the 31st GA infantry with the rank of Surgeon. In the Spring of 1863, due to ill health, he was transferred from the field to a hospital in Salisbury, NC (under Dr. Curry, Surgeon)and next to a hospital in Weldon, NC (under Maj. Webb). Paroled in NC as part of Johnston's Army and returned to Rappahannock County, VA to practice medicine.

In an article from the Confederate Veteran Magazine(Jan. 1904) in Part...Dr. William H. Amiss (Univ. of Penn, 1853)in 1861, Ast. Surgeon assigned to the 19th Mississippi Reg. where he served until after the Peninsula campaign. Transferred to the 60th GA Inf. Reg. and stayed there until the end of the War. Dr. William H. Amiss and Dr. Thomas B. Amiss were brothers and both born at "Melville" near Amissville, VA. They were cousins of Dr. Robert G. Holloway (Univ. of Penn, 1854) who, in 1864, was assigned to the 38th GA Inf. as Ast. Surgeon; promoted April 1, 1865 to Surgeon. In Dec. 1865, Dr. Holloway married Eliza, "Lilie" Amiss (sister of Drs. Thomas and William).
