The cemetery, although badly neglected holds probably 20 - 40 or so graves...none of which had been damaged but this one...and this is the only one that was a confederate.

Yes....a selfish act. The person who owned the land when this was done was very upset (according to his daughter in law). He is now deceased. Right now (have talked to so many people) I cannot remember who asked the person why he was not taking the wife. His answer (because they have used indicated it might be a grandson of some type) had to do with the fact that there was no stone on her grave...only the bare markings of bricks edging it...well sunk into the ground over the years. So...was not sure it was really his wife.

Everyone is describing the property owner as the person who owns the land surrounding the cemetery...so not sure what the real story is there...can it stand alone?

I have contacted the local Confederate group...and he said he might contact the sherriff. Did that last night.

Private William...and his brother E.O.Butts were both in the CW. E.O. probably just a short time, as he was discharged due to illness I believe. Both were active in Confederate camps after the war, William was an officer in one of the camps. Looking back at an obituary it mentions camp 617...and that he never missed a reunion. He was 91 when he died and was one of two left in Morgan county from the war.

I have not thought of the GA State Archeologist. William died in 1930...is that old enough. But...yes, I have a strong feeling that the whole process was illegal...and no records kept on purpose.

Is there still a Camp 617? The man I spoke with last night just gave me the name of soldier for the name of his camp.

Thanks for you help....any thing you can do to help will be appreciated.
