Re: Conf. Vets in Carter Co., OK

Nita,

A man at the Oklahoma Tourist Bureau told me that there were a lot of Confederate soldiers buried at Pooleville. A lady from Pauls Valley has gone down there and has written down the names of every one of them. I do not know the significance of so many buried there, but the lady in Pauls Valley said that a man down there simply made it a project to mark every one of them with government stones. That may explain it. A similar thing has happened here in Wynnewood. We have identified over 70 Confederate veterans buried in Oaklawn Cemetery here in this little town. It was simply a matter of research. Nearly every cemetery in southern, eastern, and much of southwestern Oklahoma is dotted with Confederate graves. We just simply have not done our duty in researching them.

The Confederate Home in Ardmore was built in 1910. When the last soldier died in the 1940s, it was deeded over to the state for veterans of all wars. Unfortunately, someone decided to remove the name "Confederate Home" and the date on the architrave above the columns when it was deeded over. This building is a much-neglected architectural and historical Oklahoma treasure. Not neglected in upkeep, but in interest among the people of Ardmore and the state. It is virtually ignored, but it is the last Confederate Home still standing in the World. There were two types of architecture for Confederate Homes. One was the grand hall type, such as this. The other style was a cottage arrangement around a central building. Only a few scattered cottages remain in the South. Oklahoma's grand hall Home is the only one of its kind in existence. Much should be made of this in tourism and civic promotion in Ardmore and the state.

You might find our web site interesting. Some of the soldiers we seek to honor lived out their last days at the old Home in Ardmore. By the way, there is a large Confederate section in Ardmore's Rose Hill Cemetery.
