The Indian Territory in the Civil War Message Board

Capt James L Butler

Capt James L Butler was a white citizen of the Cherokee Nation. He was the
grandson of a much beloved US Indian Agent to the Cherokee who was
granted citizenship.

He lived just north of present Bartlesville where Butler Creek flows into the
Caney River and was "postmaster" of the Little Verdigris Post Office.

He killed fellow officier Lieut Col Robt C Parks which apparently was the cause
of him joining his brother in the east. He returned to the Cherokee Nation at
the end of the war.
