Hi George,
Yes, I am still out here and happy you found my one and only post so far. However, I do read this site at least once a week, so I keep up. I thought the Bad Omen story was a good one. Frank Conseen (died 1899) was my 2nd great grandpa. His dad was Dave Conseen and died circa 1862 of smallpox. Now, this is the story I was told, whether true or not. I heard tell many of the Cherokees that signed up under Stan Watie became upset after the battle with the Loyal Creeks and was supposed to have said, they joined this civil war to kill white people and not to kill Indian people. Both Frank and his dad, Dave were Cherokee Indians.

Frank was married to Joanna Martin and she was a daughter of Joseph Lynch Martin, big time supporter of the Confederate side. He was sometimes called Greenbriar Joe and sometimes Pensacola Joe. His place was destroyed during the civil war, and he was one of the major slave owners within the Nation. Makes you wonder what Frank and Joanna talked about at the dinner table, huh?

Frank took a 2nd wife, Eliza Broyles (Cherokee) and Eliza lived long enough to get an Union pension based on Frank. My mother and Aunt told me that they all looked so forward to the $12 a month..

Thanks for the wonderful and indepth information, as I will send it to my cousins. I don't know how many will recognize "old settler" on this board, but Frank was aka Car-tas-kee when his mother, Lottie Rowe Conseen was placed on the 1851 Old Settler census. Col. Phillips stayed with Lottie in Locust Grove, which was the basis for the story of Bad Omen.

Thank you again,
Donna
