Re: Camp Kagi, county today?; Middle Boggy Battle

Patti,
Regarding my best guess of the county where Camp Kagi was located: Pontotoc County

Phillips says the battle was on Middle Boggy in the Choctaw Nation -- that would be Hughes County. But it could be he was in the Chickasaw Nation and didn't know it. It also could be he was on one of the other Boggies and didn't know it. Phillips said he camped on the battlefield at Camp Kansas.

Phillips then says he moved 20 miles south and camped on South Boggy (aka Clear Boggy or just Boggy) in the Chickasaw Nation which he called Camp Kagi. I assume the distance is fairly accurate. It could be he was mistaken about being on South Boggy and of course he could have been mistaken about whether he was in the Choctaw or Chickasaw Nation.

My personal guess is that Camp Kagi was near Cochran's on Clear Boggy in Pontotoc County (near present Frisco). Phillips crossed the Canadian at the mouth of Little River and his route was via Cochran's and to (or toward) the Rock Academy, i.e. the Dragoon Road along the Choctaw-Chickasaw boundary line. The Chickasaw Nation is of course west of the Choctaw Nation, not south, so if Phillips' reports are precise, the route that fit his reports is along Leavenworth's Dragoon Trail from the mouth of Little River (Old Ft Holmes) into the Choctaw Nation bearing southwest to Middle Boggy where the battle occurs and where Camp Kansas is located. He then moves 20 miles south (and west) crossing the boundary into the Chickasaw Nation to South Boggy (i.e. Clear Boggy) and establishes Camp Kagi at or near Cochran's.
