Re: Capt. B. F. Carter, 1st Cherokee

Ken, here is what I have so far. It's not much.

Certificate of Disability, date 7 Nov 1864, Pvt D. M. Condray, 41 years old and born in Granger County, Tennessee. He had enlisted in the Creek Nation on 1 June 1863 for two years. The enlisting officer, and his Captain at the time the certificate was issued, was a Capt. B. F. Carter. Condray was 5’ 10” tall, Dark Complexion, Hazel eyes, Dark Hair and by occupation a farmer at the time of enlistment. This took place in Bonham, Texas.

Confederate Citizens file: For providing services as a Wagon Master during the period of March 1, 1863 to March 31, 1863 D. M. Condray received $60.00. Payment was made by Quarter Master Cabell in Bonham Texas. The same info for April, 1863.

1850 Federal Census
Christian, Independence, Arkansas

Denis M Condra 27, b. Tennessee (same initials, age and place of birth)
Cynthia Condra 25, b. Kentucky (Cynthia Faulkenberry)
Elizabeth Fortenbury 46, b. Kentucky (Cynthia Elizabeth Brawley)
Mary Louallen 24, b. Arkansas
Thomas Garret 23, b. Georgia
Carroll Eskew 21, b. Kentucky
Malinda Eskew 15, b. Kentucky
Eliza Neil Eskew 13, b. Kentucky

It appears to me from what I find in ancestry.com and other sources that Cynthia Condra’s maiden name was Fortenbury (Faulkenberry). She was the daughter of James and Cynthia E Brawley-Faulkenberry. If this is correct then Cynthia Condra is the first cousin of Elijah Dickey Brawley of Reynolds County, MO who was a Captain under Martin Clardy. The same unit where we find an officer by the name of B. F. Carter. Col. Lucien Nester Farris of Clardy's was a brother-in-law of B. F. Carter and Captain Charles Carter. I have found no records for Charles Carter other than his 1890 Vet Schedule and a list compiled by Capt. James Smith of the 7th Kansas Cav. listing Charles Carter as a guerilla. I do have some other records for B. F. Carter indicating service in the 3rd Cav.

Although there are some Condray families in Reynolds County and the surrounding area, I did not expect to find this strong of a connection. I was trying to find a strong connection to B. F. Carter.

Jim
