Re: Tarlton Bull, DeMorse's 29th Cav, Co E

George W. Bull, private, (1st) co. I, 1st Choctaw & Chickisaw Mtd Rifles, enrolled at Ft Arbuckle, June 2, 1861 by Otis. G. Welch. Mustered into service near Ft Washita (also shown as Nail's Bridge) on July 8, 1861 for one year. This company reenlisted in 1862 as co. E, 29th Texas Cav (DeMorses'). He shows a enlisting June 1, 1862 at Rock Creek and July 8, 1862 at Camp Granite and at some point was promoted to corporal.
He was captured at the 1st Battle of Cabin Creek, Cherokee Nation, on July 2, 1863. He is on an undated list of prisoners sent from Ft Blunt (Ft Gibson), Cherokee Nation to Ft Scott KS. On Oct 16, 1862 he arrives at Gratiot Street Military Prison, St Louis MO. On Nov. 5, 1863 he arrives at Camp Morton, Indianapolis IN and transfered to Ft Delaware, DE on March 19, 1864. On April 10, 1865 he was transferred to Cairo IL. On April 22, 1865, he's in New Orleans, LA. On May 2, 1865, he's transfered from New Orleans to the mouth of Red River, LA for exchange.

Private Tarleton Bull, co. E, 29th Texas Cav, enrolled Jan. 1, 1863 at Camp Davis and was present June 30, 1863, the last known return for the unit.

At the 1st Battle of Cabin Creek, the Confederate did scout north of Cabin Creek, up the Texas Road, watching for the supply train and its escort, bound for Ft Gibson. Tarleton may have been at Horse Creek but the battle was not fought there. Due to high water on the Grand, reinforcements from Arkansas could not get across and Watie was driven from the crossing by a very large and well armed escort.

The crossing of Cabin Creek was just a few miles north of present Pensacola OK. Horse Creek is about 15 miles northeast, north of present Grove OK. The Ft Scott-Ft Gibson Military Road followed the Texas Road, crossing the Neosho just above the confluence of the Neosho and Spring Rivers to form the Grand River and then following just west of the Grand River to the Arkansas River between the mouths of the Verdigris and Grand. The military road turned east four miles from Ft Gibson and crossed the Grand near the fort. The Texas Road continued south across the Arkansas and on to Honey Springs, North Fork Town, Perrryville, Boggy Depot, and across the Red River at Colbert's Ferry following fairly close to the route of present US Hwy 69.
