How about a fact finding committee? With the writings of Bates, Sparks and Griscom with the distances and directions they give surely something could be proven either way.

I have a physical copy of that map at the link I sent to Mr Hammert and the scale is 25 miles per inch. Using the map and their directions and mileage we could discover the truth.
