Grand Saline was the original settlement that became Salina OK. The actual salines are now under Lake Hudson just south of town. When the Cherokee East came over the Trail of Tears and usurpted the Cherokee government, the salines or saltworks were nationalized and leased back to friends of the Ross Party. I believe Lewis Ross, Chief John Ross' brother held the lease for Grand Saline. Lewis Ross' house was where the Salina High School gymnasium now is and his springhouse is in a little park near it.

This Joe Vann must be of the Avery Vann family -- not of the James Vann family from Springplace GA. Rich Joe Vann lived near Webbers Falls and was killed in the 1840s. I've done some looking at this Avery Vann family since there is a David Vann (or Van) of this family.... and another in the James Vann family which gets very confusing. David Vann, son of Avery, lived somewhere near Grand Saline and was killed by Pins. His widow boarded with Robt Peck's family near present Okay OK per Peck's "Wagon Boss & Mule Mechanic". These wealthy families used large tracts of land for grazing cattle etc and often had multilpe houses and trading posts in other locations. During the Chusto Talasah campaign, Cooper left his train near David Van's which must have been within 10 miles somewhere along the Verdigris but this was not his primary residence.

I'll search my notes for a Joseph in the Avery Vann family.
