Re: Augustus Captain - 1st Osage Battalion

I don't know about your ancestor by that name, but the Osage were the Scouts for Stand Watie's Army at the Battle of Cabin Creek. My ancestor Washashowatinga (Bill Nixon Redcorn) in Company B and he wrote the dispatchs including the part about the white deer comming past them while the Union Wagon Train made camp at Cabin Creek. Another Ancestor of mine Albert McGhee was in the 2nd Cherokee Mounted Rifles and had gotten Bill's half brother John Math to join the Cherokee 2nd even though he was Osage. The reality was that the Osage Reserve bordered the Cherokee Neutral Lands where people of mixed Osage/ Cherokee ancestry were allowed to move to. The Channers Osage (Arkansas Osage) had been assimilated into the Greater Cherokee Nation in 1827-29. You will find alot of Delaware, Caddo and some Tuscorora in the Cherokee regiments as well. Sincerely, Guy
