In Volume 13 of Official Records, p. 48, Major General T. C. Hindman writes in his Operations Report to Lt. General Holmes on November 3, 1862: "I have ordered them (the four "orphan" Texas Cavalry regiments) dismounted and their ponies sent to Texas."

I have not seen a copy of the actual order. However, in view of the fact that Hindman had recently appointed BG Marmuduke as head of his Cavalry Division (then of Shelby and Cravens) and Cravens Brigade (basically the four Texas cavalry regiments), which MG Hindman had just stated in his report that "They are worthless as cavalry" leads me to conclude that the 20th Texas had just been dismounted, say around November 1, 1862, a day or two after their camp on Middle Fork was overrun by Herron and all of their meager camp equipment and supplies were lost to the Federals.
