The Indian Territory in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Texas Cattle Trail / Dragoon Trail

I forgot to add, if you know where to look, you can find remnants of the trail at the battlefields of Cabin Creek and Honey Springs-especially, the latter. The late
Lee Woodard showed me the Honey Springs segments on his land-now, part of the battlefield park. The circa 1897 survey, now in the Oklahoma State Archives,
fifth floor, Oklahoma Department of Libraries, shows the road(s) and an archaeologist some forty years ago told me that land use patterns, including fields,
roads and dwellings had not changed much from the war years. Lastly, My several times grandfather was a cattleman who died along the Shawnee Cattle Trail
in 1867. Some think Chisholm but my knowledge leads me to the former trail. Supposedly, of pneumonia, but researching for a paper on the cholera epidemic
that year which hit Fort Gibson and Arbuckle makes cholera more likely. Regardless, any pioneer, military or cattle route is rife with graves. Take a look at
the online Indian-Pioneer Interviews for information on the road and place along the route.
