Re: Bowles brothers, 9th Kentucky Cavalry, CSA

Capt. James W. Bowles of Louisville, Kentucky brought a company to the command of Colonel John Hunt Morgan during the winter of 1861. He was placed in the 2nd Kentucky Cavalry, C.S.A. Many of the men in his company were recruited from Glasgow, Kentucky. They were present at the first battle of Cynthiana, July 17th, 1862, making the intitial charge across the old wooden bridge and up the main street.

Promotions: Major (1862); Lt. Col. 15 January 1863 (estimated); Colonel 4 September 1864.
Intra regimental transfers from Co. "C" to Field & Staff (1862).

Residence was not listed.
Enlisted 21 August 1862 at Hartsville, Tennessee as a Sergeant.
On 21 August 1862 he mustered into "C" Co., Kentucky 2nd Cavalry.
He was killed POW (date not stated at Columbus, Ohio) (killed attempting escape)
Promotions 2nd Lieutenant.
