I accidentally confused Korff's 69th Indiana with Lt.Col.Melville D.Topping's 71st Indiana when I posted a reply the other day. For that I apologize. Korff's 69th was pretty well destroyed at Richmond too, just not quite to the extent that the 71st Ind was. I'll put together what I have on Korff and the 69th for you in the next couple days. But here is some basic info on the unit's participation at Richmond: Korff's 69th Indiana was part of Brig.Gen.Mahlon D.Manson's 1st Indiana Brigade and was engaged in all three phases of the battle, but suffered the most during the first engagement below the Mount Zion Church. Leaving three companies to hold the brigade's right near the church, Manson shifted the remainder of the regiment to his left when Cleburne threatened an attack on that flank. When they were deployed along side Topping's 71st they were nearly annihilated in a very short period of time. After the Federal Army of Kentucky's last stand at the Richmond Cemetery, the 69th Indiana had suffered at least 30 KIA and 156 WIA. By the time they were deployed in the graveyard, Both Korff and his second-in-command, Lt.Col.Job Stout, had been wounded and were put out of action. When Korff's horse was cut down, the animal fell on top of him and injured him severely. His third highest ranking officer, Maj.Thomas S.Waterhouse, had also been wounded, taking a bullet in his thigh, but he soldiered on, commanding the 69th during the engagement on the White Farm and the Cemetery fight. He was also still leading the regiment when the entire army was ambushed and captured around four miles north of Richmond, as they were falling back toward Clay's Ferry, hoping to cross the Kentucky River there and make it back to Lexington. Maj.Waterhouse and the remnants of the 69th were one of the very few Federal units to offer any resistance to the Confederate cavalry brigade that ambushed them, under Col.John S.Scott. But they were quickly overwhelmed by Col.James W.Starnes' 4th Tennessee Cavalry, and forced to surrender. I'll send you anything else I have on them as soon as I can. Take care.

Sincerely,

Mike Gabbard
