Mr.Deem,

Yes, Sir, it is the same 71st. What was your g.g.Grandfather's name? Was he Pvt.James Deem of Co.F? Co.F suffered a minimum of 11KIA and 20WIA. I'll be in the hospital for the next several days, so I'll just post the basic casualty info I have on Topping's 71st Indiana. They were very nearly annihilated at Richmond, with their officer corps almost wiped out, and their top three ranking officers among the dead or dying. Lt.Col.Melville Topping was and his second in command, Maj.William Conklin, were both killed. The 71st Indiana's casualties are the highest percentage of loss suffered by a Federal regiment in any battle, even higher than those of the 1st Minnesota at Gettysburg. Following the first two phases of the Battle of Richmond, the 71st Indiana, which had numbered around one thousand men at the start, had been reduced to only two companies of around sixty troops still able to fight. The rest had been killed, wounded, or had already been captured or fled from the field. In all, the 71st lost at least 834, including two hundred, forty-one killed and wounded. 45 had been KIA and at least 19 of the 196 wounded would later die of their wounds, your grandfather among them. Get back to me when you get a chance and I'll help you as much as I can. I have some more info on the 71st at home and can probably be of more help. A section of my book on the Battle of Richmond is on the 71st Indiana and the losses that they sustained. Well, Sir, I hope this helps, and I look forward to hearing from you. My email is infidelgrunt@yahoo.com.

Sincerely,

Michael J.Gabbard
