Re: Pvt. Benjamin L. Vance, Co. B, Butler's 1st KY

The record for Benjamin L Vance shows that he enlisted Jan 1, 1864, Dalton, Ga. There is no record that either BLV or Robert G Vance ever were carried on the rolls of a Federal military command from Kentucky. There are records showing that BLV probably enrolled for twelve months when his company organized at Bowling Green Ky in October 1861. There are pay records for the last three months of 1861 and a receipt signed by Capt John W Valentine of Helm's 1st Kentucky Cavalry. These show that BLV served as commissary sergeant for his regiment.

The enlistment date cited of January 1861 is an error as the Confederate government did not yet exist. The first hostile actions took place at Fort Sumter in April 1861. The physician Robert G Vance and his wife are mentioned several times in Middletown's Days and Deeds: The Story of 150 years of Living in an Old Kentucky Town. He died Jan 18, 1859.

The 1864 records following BLV's reenlistment also show commissary duty. He was assigned to that service on Feb 5, 1864, serving under Capt Gibbons for the remainder of the year. For that reason I would not expect to see his name associated with any battles or skirmishes.

For marker purposes, you will probably need a pension application from Texas and a service record. Those can be ordered here by clicking in the red box.
